Yellowfin Tuna (Thunnus Albacares)
Yellowfin tuna are found around the world in tropical and subtropical seas, except for the Mediterranean.
The yellowfin tuna is commonly known as Chunk Light Tuna when it’s canned. The yellowfin tuna is a large fish, reaching lengths of 8 feet and weights in excess of 450 pounds. It has a distinct yellow stripe running along its sides with long yellow dorsal and anal fins, giving it the name, yellowfin.
Yellowfin tuna, or Chunk Light Tuna can be canned in either: oil, brine (salt water), or natural spring water. Each provides the canned fish with a unique taste. Some say its flavour is similar to swordfish and is more flavourful than albacore tuna.
It is believed that Yellowfin Tuna stocks are in decline due to over fishing and the use of unsustainable fishing methods such as longline fishing and the use of FADs. To protect this species of tuna for future generations to enjoy it as canned tuna we need to look at new fish stock management practices and to support sustainable and equitable fishing methods.
